Professor Reason recently persuaded 35 people to keep
Professor Reason recently persuaded 35 people to keep a diary of all their absent-minded actions for two weeks. When he came to analyze their embarrassing errors, he was surprised to find that nearly all of them fell into a few groups.
One of the women, for instance, on leaving her house for work one morning threw her pet dog her earrings and tried to fix a dog biscuit on her ear. “The explanation for this is that the brain is like a computer,” explains the professor. “People programme themselves to do certain activities regularly.” It was the woman’s custom every morning to throw her dog two biscuits and then put on her earrings. “But somehow the action got reversed(颠倒)in the programme.” About one in twenty of the incidents the volunteers reported were these “programme assembly failures.”
Twenty percent of all errors were “test failures” — mainly due to not verifying the progress of what the body was doing. A man about to get his car out of the garage passed through the back yard where his garden jacket and boots were kept, put them on — much to his surprise. A woman reported, “I got into the bath with my socks on.”
The commonest problem was information “storage failures”. People forgot the names of people whose faces they knew, went into a room and forgot why they were there, mislaid something, or smoked a cigarette without realizing it.
The research so far suggests that while the central processor of the brain is liberated from second-to-second control of a well-practiced routine, it must repeatedly switch back its attention at important decision points to check that the action goes on as intended. Otherwise the activity may be gotten by another frequently and recently used programme, resulting in embarrassing errors.
小题1:The purpose of the professor’s research is to __________.
A.show the difference between men and women
B.sort and explain some errors in human actions
C.find the causes which lead to computer failures
D.compare computer functions with brain working
小题2:Which of the following might be grouped under “programme assembly failures”
A.A woman went to a shop and forgot what to buy.
B.A man returning home after work left his key in the lock.
C.A lady fell as she was paying attention to each step her feet were taking.
D.An old man, with his shoes on, was trying to put on his socks.
小题3:The underlined word “verifying” (in paragraph 3) can be replaced by “_______”.
A.improving
B.changing
C.checking
D.stopping
小题4:According to the passage, the information “storage failure” refers to “_______”.
A.information collecting system being destroyed
B.one’s total memory being removed
C.the loss of part of one’s memory for a time
D.the separation of one’s action from words

I have a good memory of my grandfather,Jack. He was sitting in his armchair in the front room.
I sat next to him. We were reading aloud, our heads bent over the page in front of us,a finger marking the words;separated by seven decades, brought together by words. It's a common scene in British families;however,in our case, the usual order of things is reversed(颠倒).Granddad had been blind since I was tiny,so I was reading to him. When reading aloud, people usually read something that's of interest to the listener. So I didn't read children's books;I read the sorts of things Granddad liked to hear about. Much of the vocabulary in Granddad’s reading material was far beyond me. When I met unfamiliar words,I'd spell them out.
Granddad would help me. It must have been painful for him to hear news;but he never hurried me along or complained. Our reading wasn't really about getting knowledge. It was a way for us to spend time together.
My grandfather wasn't always blind. He had been a good carpenter(木匠).The first Christmas of my parents' marriage,he built my mother a bookcase, which now belongs to my son Jonah, providing a link between four generations.
I was a fortunate child;I spent a lot of time with my grandfather, and he opened the world to me in a particular way. Reading was our way of building a relationship that has had a lasting effect on me. In the school holidays,I sometimes accompanied him on trips to the seaside with the local association for the blind. This might seem strange, but I felt that my personal value was realized because I could finally do something for Granddad.
A decade later,I found a position in a nursing home, which reminded me of my early experiences;reading to senior citizens was a connection back to Granddad. More than simple conversation, reading aloud is a connection between two individuals and it can have a big emotional(情感的)effect on elderly people.
小题1:What can we know from the first paragraph
A.The author's grandfather was born blind.
B.The author is seventy years younger than her grandfather.
C.The author often sat opposite to her grandfather while reading.

小题2:Why didn't the author choose to read children's books
A.To expand her knowledge.
B.To make her vocabulary bigger.
C.To show off in front of her grandfather.
D.To satisfy the needs of her grandfather.
小题3:How did the author feel during the trips with Granddad
A.Proud.
B.Troubled.
C.Curious.
D.Embarrassed.

Once there was a young woman who didn’t like her job. Everyd
Once there was a young woman who didn’t like her job. Everyday when she came home from work, she told her husband how terrible her day had been, how tiring the work and how unreasonable her boss. “Leave that job,” her husband told her.
“Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. I have too many friends there for me to leave.” And so she remained unhappy at work until the years became decades and her children had children. “Leave that job,” her grandchildren told her. “Oh, I will,” she said. “But not yet. There are only seven more years until I reach thirty years of service and can retire. So I can’t just yet.”
I know this woman. And her story reminds me of an old dog half asleep on the porch of a general store, moaning and groaning in the sun. “Why is your dog acting that way” a customer asked the store owner. “Oh,” answered the man. “He’s lying on a nail.” “Well, why doesn’t he move” “Because it’s not hurting him bad enough.”
That’s true for people, too. We convince ourselves the pain is not bad enough to leave the workplace we know. But we’re wrong. Prolonged work pain is continuing. Some work pain damages our self-esteem, kills our passion or destroys our dreams.
Wilbur Wright once commented, “We could hardly wait to get up in the morning. I know that exhilarating feeling of being so passionate about something I was working on that I couldn’t wait to get back to work. And people who are winning at working know that kind of passion, too.”
They get excited about work. They offer their unique gifts and talents eagerly. And when things don’t change as they sometimes will, they refuse to let environment hijack(劫持) their self-esteem, passion or dreams.

小题2:From the second paragraph we can know that the woman .

It’s parents’ worst nightmare. Their child doesn’t come home
It’s parents’ worst nightmare. Their child doesn’t come home one evening and is missing for several days.
When a 14-year-old boy from Atlanta, Georgia disappeared earlier this year, his mother turned to her Smartphone for clues using an app(应用程序) called Family Tracker that helped track his location.
“You can see where your loved ones are without having to call or bother them. ”said Roberto Franceschetti of LogSat, the creators of the Family Tracker, which has more than 100,000 users and is available worldwide.
Parents can track the location of their child on a map, send messages, and even sound an alarm on the phone in a long distance.
“We have an option for the sender to make a very unpleasant, noisy sound. It’s a loud alarm and we repeat that sound every two minutes until the person picks it up, ”he said.
Parents don’t need to own a Smartphone to track their children. The service is also accessible through the web, as long as the phone that is being tracked is running the app.
Family Tracker has an additional service that keeps records of all data from the app for a two-week period, which the company calls GPS breadcrumbs.
“With a subscription(预定), we keep all the locations where people have been on our servers. You can see where your kid has been for the past two weeks. You can find out where someone was at a certain time or when that person was at a specific place, ”Franceschetti explained.
“When somebody gets abducted(劫持), usually whoever does this throws the phone away or takes the battery out. We were hoping that our app would at least provide information on where the person was abducted or where they had been in the past. ”
But will these types of apps let out personal secrets
“The advantages are huge compared to the disadvantages. Let’s not forget that the person always has to give initial permission—no one can be tracked unless they allow someone to do it. ”said Franceschetti.
小题1:According to the passage, all of the following about “Family Tracker” are true EXCEPT that __________.
A.it can help parents know where their children are
B.all parents don’t need to own a Smartphone to track children

D.it has little to do with letting out personal secrets
小题2:What can we infer from the passage

Rachel Carson, born in rural Pennsylvania in 1907, had a great impact on the environment. Carson earned a master’s degree in zoology in 1932. It was as a writer and not as a research scientist, however, that she made her mark, sharing her view that human beings are just one element in a larger natural order.
In the articles on natural history Carson wrote for various publications, she expressed dry facts in poetic and persuasive language. She wrote five books. Two of them, The Sea Around Us and The Edge of the Sea, have been called “biographies of the ocean.”
Carson also made the world aware of how scientific discoveries can harm as well as help living things. In her best-selling book Silent Spring, Carson challenged the profligate use of chemical pesticides by large agricultural and government organizations. She was the first to detail how the pesticide DDT had entered the food chain and damaged populations of bald eagles, falcons, and brown pelicans by causing the shells of their eggs to become so thin that they could not withstand the weight of the parent bird.
Carson died of cancer in 1964. Today, the Rachel Carson Council collects and disseminates (散播) information on pesticide-related issues. In 1970, the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, a large area of salt marsh and freshwater habitat in Maine, was dedicated to her memory.
