The story of printing is a long and complex one. Before the invention of printing, the spread of knowledge depended either on word of mouth or handwriting. Both took time and errors happened easily. 2000 years ago in the Western Han Dynasty, stone-tablet rubbing(拓印) was common for spreading Confucianism or Buddhism. This led in the Sui Dynasty (581-618) to the use of carving writing or pictures on a wooden board, which became known as block printing(木版印刷).
The first book with an exact date of printing appeared in China in 868. In the Tang Dynasty (618-907), this technology was gradually introduced to Korea, Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Block printing reached its golden age during the Song dynasty (960-1279) as the government encouraged the publication of large numbers of books. Yet block printing had its drawbacks. All the boards became useless after the printing was done and a single mistake in carving could ruin a whole block. In the Song Dynasty, a man named Bi Sheng carved individual characters on pieces of fine clay(粘土). Then he hardened the clay by a slow baking process, resulting in pieces of movable type.
Movable type printing has a very important position in the history of printing, for all later printing methods such as wooden type, copper type and lead type printing all developed on the basis of movable clay types. During the 13-14th centuries, This technology spread to Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Europe. Later, German Johann Gutenberg invented movable type made of metal in the 15th century.

Tess was a precocious(早熟) eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad taling about her little brother,Andrew.____ __she knw was that he was very sick and they were completely _____money. Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly(果冻) jar from its hiding place. She poured all the out on the floor and counted carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be absolutely exact. No here for mistakes. After carefully placing the coins back in the jar, she slipped out of the back door, and her way six blocks to a chemist’s.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some ,but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a noise. Nothing. She cleared her with the most awful sound she could muster. No good.
Finally the pharmacist asked in an tone of voice, “What do you want I’m talking to my brother from Chicago I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “His name is Andrew and he has something bad inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry, I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, his voice a little.
There was a man there whose clothes were admirable. He asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need”
“I don’t know” Tess replied with tears in her eyes. “I just know he's sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can’t pay it, so I want to use my money.”
“How much do you have” asked the man. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered.
“A dollar and eleven cents ― the price of a miracle for your little brother,” smiled the man, “Take me to you live. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”
That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery (神经外科). The operation was completely charge and it wasn’t long before Andrew was home again and did well.
Mom and Dad were happy but they wonder how much the operation would have . Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost…one dollar and eleven cents…plus the of a little child.

A Japanese toy maker declares that they have developed a gad
A Japanese toy maker declares that they have developed a gadget that translates dog barks into human language and plans to begin selling the gadget——under the name of Bowlingual——in U. S. pet stores and gift shops this summer.
Tokyo-based Takara Co. Ltd. says about 300, 000 of the dog translator gadgets have been sold since it was on sale in Japan late last year. It is forecasting far bigger sales once an English language translation for dogs comes to America in August. The United States is home to about 67 million dogs, more than six times the number in Japan.
"We know that the Americans love their dogs so much, so we don't think they will mind spending $ 120 on this product, " the Takara marketing manager said during an interview at a recent pet products conference in Atlanta.
Regarded as one of the coolest inventions of 2002 by Time magazine, Bowlingual is made up of a 3 - inch long wireless microphone that is fastened to a dog collar and sends out sounds to a small console (控制台) that is connected to a database (数据库). The console divides each bark into six emotional types——happiness, sadness, disappointment, anger, threat and desire——and shows common phrases, such as "You're ticking me off," that fit the dog's emotional state.
Takara says it has spent millions of dollars developing the gadget in cooperation(合作)with famous sound experts and animal behaviorists.
One thing that does appear certain is that the markets for animal translation products will likely remain a dog's world since Takara has no plans to develop a similar gadget for cats. "They are too unpredictable (反复无常) , " the marketing manager said.

Look at the diagram. It something of home computer used by a group of young people. We asked thirty young people between fourteen and eighteen. We asked them how much they usually spent on their computers in a week, but we were most interested in they used their computers for.
The usual time spent on a computer in a week was about twelve hours, with user about thirty-two hours, and the lowest user only five hours.
All the children said they usually used computers . Fourteen children told us they did some word processing (文字处理) . Only two of them said computers helped with their lessons, and eight people told us they kept addresses and phone numbers on their computers or used as diaries. Only three people said they were learning to make computer programmes and nobody looked up databases(数据库). None of them used computers for any use.
The results show that computer use is quite high among 14~18 year old. They also show quite clearly that computers by most young people as little more than game machines. The only other great uses are for word-processing and address lists. Though computers are common in the homes of young people, they have not yet become useful in everyday life.

One of the greatest contributors to the first Oxford English
One of the greatest contributors to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文) showing how it was used.
This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.
Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors.
But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院) for the Criminally Insane.
Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.
In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.
Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volunteers defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.
