Before you can start speaking and writing in English, your brain must get enough correct English sentences. This is obvious(显而易见的).
There are two ways to get correct English sentences: listening and reading. Both are good, but reading is much easier than listening. With the help of a good dictionary, you will be able to understand English texts much more easily than movies. If you just read one book in English, you will see that your English has become much better. English phrases will just come to you without thinking when you are writing or speaking.
This is true for hundreds of words and grammar structures(结构). If you read in English, you can forget about grammar rules. Throw away your grammar book! You needn’t know the rules for the present perfect tense(现在完成时). Instead, read a few books in English, and soon you will feel that “I have seen Paul yesterday” is wrong. The only difference between you and native speakers is that they have heard and read more English sentences than you have. From the first paragraph, we know that ________.What is the best way to get correct English sentences according to the passage? In the writer’s opinion, we can grasp English grammar rules _______.The only difference between you and native speakers is that native speakers _______.What’s the main idea of the passage?

What would you do if a stranger gave you some medicine and said it would keep you slim or help you do well in exams? Would you take it?
Students at Shenzhen Luohu Foreign Language Middle School have learned to keep themselves safe by saying “no”. In fact, what those strangers want to give them are drugs(毒品). Drugs are dangerous to your health!
“Because teens don’t know much about drugs, they might want to try them.” said Zhang Dongsheng, the director of Shenzhen Drug Control Office.
Now, many schools arrange(安排)courses or organize some activities to help students know about drugs.
Liang, 16, was a good student before trying drugs. One day, some old friends told him it would be fun. After taking drugs only once, he found it very hard to stop. Liang began to spend all his time and money on drugs. Soon, he stopped going to school and started stealing(偷窃). In the end, he was put in prison.
In China, taking drugs is becoming a big problem for teens. According to a survey, about one million people in China were using illegal(违法)drugs last year, and 72% of them were young people. Worse still, there are about 10,000 drug users under 16 now.
Zhang has some good advice on
staying clean. He said, “Drugs are dangerous. Never try them, even if you’re curious! It is the most important for you to keep safe and healthy.”Which statement is right about drugs?According to this passage, many schools arrange courses or some activities to __________ nowTeens want to try drugs because __________From Liang’s story, we can know that it is not __________ to give up drugs even if one tries only onceWhat does the phrase

Reading is the key to school success and, like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity (自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he
stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase (短语). With automaticity, he doesn’t have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount (数量) of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable (适合) for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.“Reading is the key to school success” means that reading

There once lived in China a very foolish king and queen. One day the queen had a baby daughter. When they saw their baby, they both cried out, “My goodness! How small it is! It’s hairless and toothless! It’s a monster!” They sent for all the doctors in the country and ordered them to prepare some medicine for her.
“When she drinks your medicine, she must grow to the right size and have hair and teeth,” the king said, “If you don’t do this, you’ll have a beating.”
The doctors thought it impossible, but they dared not say anything against the king’s order. Just then and old doctor stepped forward. “Oh, we shall certainly obey your order,” he said, “but it takes time. We have to dig a mineral from the KunLun Mountains when the snow melts for the second time. The snow melts on those mountains only once in six years. So we need twelve years.”

Being safe in your everyday life needs knowledge. If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer.
● Always notice the environment around you. You shouldn’t walk alone outside late at night. Make sure where the public phones are. If anything dangerous happens, you can find them easily.
●Your bag should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting it on your back。When a bus is full of people,it is easy enough for a thief to take away the things in the bag on your back.
●If you are followed by someone you don’t know, cross the street and go to the other way, let the person understand that you know he or she is after you. Next, don’t go home at once. You are safer in the street than you are alone in your home or in a lift.
●If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop a few minutes earlier before the bus leaves. This stops other people from studying you. On the bus, don’t sit alone. Sit behind the driver or other people. Don’t sleepWhich of the following is NOT safe when you are out? When you are followed by someone on your way home, you should ____ to make yourself safeWhen you take a bus alone,it’s safe for you______What can you learn from the passage?

Mr. and Mrs. Smith have just opened a small restaurant. In order to attract customers, they put a notice in front of the restaurant, which said: “Meals on the house for three days.”
A foreign student who didn’t know much English passed by the restaurant on the second day. It was lunchtime and he felt hungry. “Well, here is a restaurant. I’m going to have something to eat,” he said.
He saw the notice when he walked towards the restaurant. “American people are really strange. They even eat dinners on the house! But how can I get onto the top of the house?” he asked himself.
He looked around and found a ladder(梯子)against a tree nearby. He was very glad. But as he reached the top, he heard someone shouting at him: “Hey, what are you doing up there?” Mr Smith was looking at him angrily. Beside him was a policeman.
“Doesn’t your notice say ‘Meals on the house for three days’? Is it just a joke?” the foreign student answered.

Good writing starts with good ideas. If you write about things that you care about, you will write better. If you write about things that you don’t care about, you’ll be bored and your paper will not have many good ideas.
Once you have a good idea, the next step is organization (组织). Think through your paper before you start. Write an
outline. You need to know what your main points are before you start your first paragraph. Use 2-4 main points, one paragraph each.
In your central paragraphs, be concise and specific(简洁具体). Give examples with details, not just general ideas. If you can say the same thing with fewer words, do it! Don’t use big words.
When you finish writing, look at your outline again. Did you really follow it or did it change as you wrote? Many times you find different ideas as you write. Look at your central paragraphs. What are their main ideas now? Are theses ideas in the introduction? I often write the introduction again to fit the paper after I finish writing. What is the 1
st step for a good writing? What does the word “outline” mean in the 2
nd paragraph? What should you do in the central paragraph? What should you do after finishing writing?
