As she walked round the large shop, Edith realized how difficult it was to choose a suitable Christmas
1for her father.
She wished that he were as easy to
2as her mother, who was always
3with perfume (香水). Besides, shoping at this time of the year was a most
4job. People
5on your feet, pushed you with their shoulders and almost
6you over in their hurry in order to find something cheap ahead of you.
Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter, where some beautiful ties were on show . "They are real silk," the shop assistant told her with a smile trying to
7her to buy one. But Edith knew from past
8that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father.
She moved on slowly and then, quite by chance,
9where a small crowd of men had gathered round a counter. She found some fine pipes on sale and the shapes were very beautiful. Edith did not hesitate for long, although her father
10smoked a pipe once in a while, she believed this was
11to please him.
When she got home, with her small but
12present hidden in her handbag, it was time for supper and her parents were already at table. Her mother was in great

I ran across an old photo of him the other day, thinking of some old things. He’s been dead for 25 years. His name was Rex.
1 was his favorite recreation(娱乐). He had so much
2 in the water as any person I have known. You didn’t have to throw a stick in the water to
3 him to go in. Of course, he would bring back a stick to you if you
4 throw one in.
That
5 me of that night,
6 he brought back a small box that he found somewhere--- how
7 nobody ever knew. Since it was Rex, it

10. Still it was something he wanted, probably
11 there was some difficulty in transportation(运输). And that he thought could test his courage. We first knew about his achievement when, deep in the night, we
12 him trying to get the box up onto the porch(门厅). It sounded
13 two or three people were trying to tear the house
14. We came downstairs and turned on the
15 light. Rex was on the top step trying to pull the thing up, but it had
16somehow. And he was just holding his own(坚持着). I suppose he would have held his own
17 dawn if we hadn’t helped him. The next day we carried the box miles away and threw it out. If we had thrown it out in a
18 place, he would have brought it home again, as a small token(象征)of his strength in such matters.
19, he had been taught to carry heavy wooden objects about and he was
20 of his skill.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Love is blind”? If so, you are already
1with a type of mistake in our attempts to understand others: halo effects. This type of mistake
2to the fact that once we form an overall impression of somebody, it could have strong effects on our
3of his personality.
4 , halo effects are both common and powerful. For example, most organizations contain one or more “superstars”--- people who have earned the reputation for being unusually
5and capable. Once they have gained such a “halo”, everything they do receives good
6. Ideas that would be regarded as just so-so if suggested by someone else are seen as
7when proposed by these persons. And actions that might be considered risky if taken by others are seen as brave when carried out by these “chosen” men and women.
As you can see, halo effects carry high costs. They may lead some persons to have an
8high opinion of their own worth, while making things
9for others who are equally deserving. Further, by giving too much influence to persons who are not ready to receive it, and by preventing hidden talent from being
10, they can harm organizations as well as individuals. Clearly, then, it is important to recognize the existence and impact of halo effects; only then can their harmful effects be avoided.

On the first day of the sixth grade, I noticed one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “ Don’t
1her,” warned Lauren, who sat beside me. “or they will make fun of you.”
Amy had many
2differences - lots of reasons for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were an inch thick. And she had really uneven teeth.
Every day
3we drove to and from school, kids would shout insults(侮辱) at Amy. “God,what a strange face! Stop
4me!”“Mr. Rolland (the driver)! Amy took off her glasses, and now her eyes are frightening me.
5her put them back on!” For a while I shouted my
6of insults, just so I’d fit in.
7, I didn’t want them to treat me the same way they treated Amy.
But while I was insulting her, my heart
8for the girl. I could see that the insults were making her look uglier, because she was so
9and alone. Then I wanted to
10her. I just didn’t know how to stop my schoolmates -
11the night of our class roller-skating party.
Our whole class was there,
12Amy. Amy didn’t know how to skate, but I could see how much she wanted to have
13like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand.
14we began the journey together around the skating rink. She just smiled, and every once in a while she would laugh in excitement.
On the school bus the next morning, there was much
15about Amy and me skating together. But
16insulted her or me. And they didn’t do that for the rest of the year. I
17heard from Amy again after the school year. But I’ve always
18that I changed her life for the better.

Several years ago, well-known writer and editor Norman Cousins became very ill. His body ached and he felt constantly tired. It was difficult for him to even
1 around. His doctor told him that he would lose the ability to move and eventually die from the disease. He was told he had only a 1 in 500 chance of survival.
Despite the diagnosis(诊断), Cousins was
2 to overcome the disease and survive. He had always been interested in medicine and had read a book, which discussed the idea of how body chemistry and health can be damaged by emotional stress and negative
3. The book made Cousins think about the possible
4 of positive attitudes and emotions. He thought, “Is it possible that love, hope, faith, laughter, confidence, and the
5 to live have positive treatment value?”
He decided to concentrate on positive emotions as a way to treat some of the symptoms of his disease. In addition to his traditional medical treatment, he tried to put himself in situations that would
6 positive emotions. “Laugh therapy” became part of his treatment. He
7 time each day for watching comedy films, reading humorous books, and doing other activities that would draw out
8 emotions. Within eight days of starting his ‘‘laugh therapy” program his pain began to
9 and he was able to sleep more easily. He was able to return to work in a few months’ time and

When I was a boy, every holiday that I had seemed wonderful. My

In those days the

Have you ever simply wanted to give without expecting anything in return? It’s
1 to do. Most look for a reward in some way. I know I did, most of the time, but then a TV program of “Oprah” inspired me. She gave everyone in the audience $1,000 to spend on a complete
2,accompanied by a video camera to
3 what they did with the money.
Two sisters from Georgia
4from the crowd in my mind---they put their money together to give to “My sister’s House”, a
5that helps battered(受虐的) women and children. Not only did they
6 their money, but they told everyone in their town about the organization. It was amazing that people were crazy to ring and
7money, baby clothing, and more.
This story made me realize how often I expect things from others and how
8I give things in return. I don’t have a thousand dollars to spend on a stranger, but I do have a heart that is full of love and generosity. I now hold doors open for others and
9at people I don’t know, because a smile is contagious(有感染力的) and I try to bring as much happiness as I can into others’ lives. It’s difficult, but I feel it is really

Being alone in outer space can be frightening. That is one reason why astronauts on solo (单独的) space flights were given plenty of work to keep them
1. They were also constant communication with people on the earth.
2 , being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine (潜水艇) voyages. It will also happen on
3space flights in the future. Will there be special problem of adjustment under such conditions?
Scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of
4is. When men are
5together for a long period, they begin to feel uneasy. Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. In the limited space over a long period of time, however, these little habits may become very
6.
Apparently, although no one wants to be
7all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called a stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of
8or stress.
People who are well-adjusted are able to
9stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in
10our astronauts. These men undergo a long period of testing and training. One of the things tested is their behavior under stress.
